New Laws Proposed to Limit “Surprise Billing”

Senators from both parties are looking to limit or end the practice known as “surprise billing or “balance billing” which occurs when hospitals or doctors charge patients for doctors and hospitals not in their network. The new legislation would require patients to pay what is outlined in their insurance plan, but not above that, instead looking back to the insurance company for resolution. Another proposal would have hospitals notify emergency patients their insurance is out of network and provide the option to leave and go to a new facility.
